Dishwasher
Troubleshooting
The main parts of a modern dishwasher
are actually fairly few, simple and common across all brands
and models. Due to their simplicity, dishwashers are generally
very reliable and, in the cases when dishwashers do go wrong,
troubleshooting is a simple process which you can do yourself
before having to consider repair or replacement of parts with a
dishwasher spare. Below is an explanation of the major
components and their functions.

Dishwasher doesn't fill with
Water
The first
thing to check is the water supply. Make sure
the water valve from the mains is open. The
valve is usually locate under the kitchen sink.
Check the dishwashers water inlet valve. It is
usually located behind the panel under the
dishwasher door. Once accessed (turn off the
power first!) check that all the hoses are
securely attached and there are no leaks.
Whilst you're in there you can also check the
drain valve for similar problems as the water
might be coming in ok, but draining straight
out again. It's also worth checking the
dishwashers door seal and catch. If the door
isn't properly closed and sealed the dishwasher
will not run properly as a safety
precaution.

The Dishwasher doesn't Drain
Properly
It's normal for a small
amount of water to be left in the basin of the dishwasher after
a cycle. If the amount of water seems excessive, or doesn't
drain over time when left, the drain line could be blocked, or
the pump isn't pumping out properly. The first thing to do is
remove the strainer and filters from the drain hole in the
basin of the dishwasher (whilst they're out you could give them
a clean, they can attribute to any blockages themselves). Check
if the drain hole is blocked, if it appears to be, try forcing
a brush or similar down the clear any blockage. If this doesn't
help try checking the drain valve and and hose for
obstructions.
Water doesn't get
Hot
The heating element's
role is to heat/maintain water temperature and to dry the
dishes during the dry cycle. If the heating element is
malfunctioning, the dishwasher will run cold and your dishes
will not be cleaned properly. To test the heating element first
disconnect the dishwasher from the electric mains. Locate the
heating element in the basin of the dishwasher and note where
the two power terminals enter the base. Remove the lower panel
below the dishwasher door and locate the two terminals. If the
wiring and/or connectors appear damaged or corroded they will
require replacement. If you have the know how you can test the
element using a voltmeter. If the voltmeter moves to a +/-
extreme, or doesn't move at all, then the dishwashers heating
element is damaged and will require replacement with a
spare.
